Perhaps the most famous pirate in history was Edward Teach, known as Blackbeard (about 1680-1718). He was a very colourful character : he was cruel, rough, he had a long black beard and long black hair ; he wore a bright red coat and always carried a lot of guns and knives. He was born in Bristol, England, and went to sea on English privateer ships in the early eighteenth century. During his short career, he commanded two ships with a total of 250 British pirates. One day, the pirates waited for the battle, said to Blackbeard : « Did you tell your wife Mary where you buried the treasure ? » Blackbeard replied : « Only the Devil and I know where I buried the treasure ! »
